Monopoly is one of the most basic and important economic issues, among which, its trend, namely more monopoly or more competition over years, is the heart of such debates. In this paper, both of trumpeted and balanced panel data imply fast decreasing HHIs, and simulated Zipf distributions consistently imply fast decreasing shape parameters. For most industries in recent China, original trumpeted data do significantly overestimate trend in competition for industries which expand whereas underestimate for industries which shrink, and this overestimation and/or underestimation gets much more severe over periods. Besides, results from simulated Zipf distributions indicate more severe bias with original trumpeted data in most cases.
